Thornless Honey Locust (Gleditsia Triacanthos Inermis) Seedling Tree
These trees are prodigy seedlings developed from the breeding work of John Hershey.
Planting information: These fast growing trees produce pods with high levels of sugar. At least hardy to zone 5b but we have observed trees growing in zone 4.
Fruiting information: Drops large pods in late fall to early winter.
Benefits: Because of its high carbohydrate levels honey locust is a special tree that was the favorite food of North American pachyderms. Agroforest potential is high for pig, goat, and cow feed because of the fall early winter drop. Native to the US honey locust supports a verity of wildlife.
Growers note: These trees are breed to be thornless. However, there is always some potential for thorn development. Additionally claims of nitrogen fixing have been found to be not the case.
